There’s a general feeling in the air these days that the United States is in decline. Last week, it was added to a list of “backsliding democracies”. Think of that. The country that pretends it invented democracy is losing interest in the experiment. It’s impossible to overstate today’s existential threat to our country from within.
But that aside, a small example of how Donald Trump dicked up everything he touched. As you know, he destroyed the Iran accords by withdrawing from the treaty that his predecessor worked so hard to bring to fruition. The plan for Trump was to squeeze Iran from all directions. And the Israelis, particularly Benjamin Netanyahu, approved this approach.
Well, it didn’t work. Iran elected more hardline leaders and began to enrich uranium without limits.
This has left world leaders scrambling for a new deal. And thanks to Donald Trump, we are not negotiating partners in any deal going forward. That’s right, the only hyperpower in the world is not allowed in the room because we are, to put it bluntly, untrustworthy.
War in the region is a possibility. Israel’s bellicose stance towards Iran all but guarantees that it will try and defend itself by any means and if that means nuke for nuke, I certainly would not be surprised. We wouldn’t be at this juncture were it not for Trump’s ham-fisted approach towards diplomacy.
