Rolling Stone’s got hold of some interesting texting that went on in the days leading up to and on January 6th that seem to suggest that the president, or someone in his circle, either organized or knew the siege on the Capitol was imminent. They also show a bit of internecine warfare between competing rally groups.
I don’t know if we are ever going to find out who “planned” the attack on the Capitol. It may have been the case that supporters were whipped up into a frenzy by various provocateurs (to include the president himself), and the breaching was an organic extension of all the pent-up anger. The tenors of some of the promoters of the rally ( see people like Steve Bannon, Ali Alexander and the Kremers) suggest that lots of people were told some off the wall shit was going to go down, but what that was going to look like was not clear until it happened. Make no mistake, the president fomented the insurrection-but did he have a plan? Did he approve any plans? Did he expressly state instructions for anyone to riot? I don’t know if he was that bright. Much digging still needs to be done, though.
