The Christian bigots know no boundaries:
Traditional family values need to be supported against activism by the gay minority, and the idea that gays were suppressed in Russia was “a trick”, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday.
We should not rape nature because of ideological, political or individual preferences,” said Russian Railways boss Vladimir Yakunin, who was hosting a conference in Geneva to promote his foundation, the Endowment for St Andrew the First Called.
Asked if his support for “socially responsible media” meant that the French newspaper Charlie Hebdo should not have printed satirical cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad, Yakunin noted that Charlie Hebdo had also printed cartoons satirizing Orthodox Christianity, which he said was “bad culture”.
Please kill these motherfuckers. I’m not ignoring the human cost of letting ISIL run rampant over the region, but this is a bunch of religious bullshit. I’ve had it with fundamentalists of all stripes. We are the caretakers of Iraq whether we like it or not.
This sounds familiar:
As the country marches toward nationwide marriage equality and polls show record levels of support for same-sex marriage, there’s a fierce anti-gay backlash underway that imperils some of the most basic rights of the country’s LGBT citizens: Under the guise of protecting religious liberty, conservative lawmakers across the country are proposing bills that would allow businesses and individuals not to serve gay people, provided that they discriminate based on their religious beliefs.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Your religion does not excuse you from being a fucking douchebag. You are not allowed to strip other human beings of their constitutionally guaranteed equal rights just because you believe in a sky daddy who is a total dick.
I pick on Christians because they have the gumption to whine that their civil rights are being violated even though this culture is largely Christian in word and deed. A world away, Muslims, for example, are no better on this count.
It’s high time for federal action to protect the basic rights of homosexuals. That’s what it took to give blacks the right to engage in the market without discrimination. Of course, this is a pipe dream for the time being, given that the last election swept into office regressive dickweeds who Fear The Queer. But someday, the pendulum will swing in another direction and there won’t be a damn thing bigots can do to stop it.
Jim Inhofe, chairman of the Environment and Public Works Committee(!!!), is citing scripture as evidence that climate change is not real. Look:
“I take my religion seriously,” Inhofe writes. “[T]his is what a lot of alarmists forget: God is still up there, and He promised to maintain the seasons and that cold and heat would never cease as long as the earth remains.”
For those still skeptical of his climate change skepticism, Inhofe quotes from the source material, “one of my favorite Bible verses,” Genesis 8:22:As long as the earth remains/
There will be springtime and harvest/Cold and heat, winter and summer.”
I’m no bible expert, but maybe he should not be so eager to cherry pick scripture. I can do that too. From the same book, Genesis 3:
17And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
18Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the field;
19In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.
A capricious fella, that God of yours.
It is the nature of journalism to Get The Story And Get There First. It has very little to do with a paper’s ostensible lean one way or another; if it bleeds, it leads. If the NYT didn’t cover Email-gate, someone else would have. The Bush administration would have shopped the Iraq hype to someone else if Judith Miller hadn’t been so happy to help. Now, I watch MSNBC. This week, once they ran out of snowstorm coverage and reporting non-stories, they were breathlessly trying to get the bottom of Email-gate. I just saw an exasperated Lanny Davis try to defend Clinton from Tamron Hall. On the MSNBC website, Email-gate and the scramble to do damage control is on the splash in giant typeface.
Folks, there’s a liberal and conservative media, but on the whole mass media will report anything as long as it is salacious, partisanship be damned. The order of the day is not journalism, not digging deep, it’s parroting the dominant narrative. As Frank Zappa said:
Take your TV tube and eat it
‘N all that phony stuff on sports
‘N all the unconfirmed reports
You know I watched that rotten box
Until my head begin to hurt
From checkin’ out the way
The newsman say they get the dirt
Before the guys on channel so-and-so
And further they assert
That any show they’ll interrupt
To bring you news if it comes up
They say that if the place blows up
They will be the first to tell,
Because the boys they got downtown
Are workin’ hard and doin’ swell,
And if anybody gets the news
Before it hits the street,
They say that no one blabs it faster
Their coverage can’t be beat
